The rest of the phone world might’ve decided curved displays need consigning to the history books, but Motorola isn’t ready to let go just yet. The newly-revealed Edge 70 Fusion’s quad-curved OLED sets it apart from mid-range smartphone rivals, while Moto was also first in line for a new Sony-developed camera sensor that could give it a leg up on photo quality.
Announced at Mobile World Congress, the Edge 70 Fusion is essentially a spec step down from the Motorola Edge 70. It’s a sliver thicker than that size zero handset, sure, but 7.21mm is still impressively svelte for a mid-ranger. It should also prove a tough nut to crack, with Corning Gorilla Glass 7i and IP68/IP69 resistance against dust and water. Moto has even put it through he MIL-STD-810H gauntlet, meaning extreme heat, cold and shock won’t spell disaster.
The 6.78in panel has a speedy 144Hz refresh rate, which Motorola reckons is the highest of any curved-edge display. A peak brightness of 5200 nits ought to put it among the phone world’s strongest shiners too. It looked very clear during my (indoor) demo session.
As I’ve come to expect from Motorola, the Edge 70 Fusion will launch in a bunch of jazzy hues approved by colour expert Pantone. The rear panels have textured finishes inspired by nylon and linen, which I thought gave the phone some welcome extra grip over the usual glass-and-metal sandwich. I do wonder if the firm’s extensive lineup of Edge, Signature and Moto G handsets are beginning to blur into one another design-wise, though.
Moto hasn’t skimped on the rear camera setup, being first with a Sony LYTIA 710 sensor. It has optical image stabilisation and a 50MP pixel count. The accompanying 13MP ultrawide has phase-detect autofocus for pulling double duty as a macro snapper, and there’s a 32MP selfie camera up front capable of 4K recording.
Power comes courtesy of a Qualcomm Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 chipset and either 8 or 12GB of RAM, with 128, 256 and 512GB storage variants on offer. It felt as speedy as I’d hope for a mid-range handset during my preview session, though I didn’t get the chance to do much more than scroll through websites and open all the pre-loaded apps.
If you want a colourful handset you can expect the Edge 70 Fusion to come with a 5200mAh battery, but if you’re happy to stick with Pantone Silhouette (a dark grey/black) there’s also a version with a beefier 7000mAh cell. 68W wired charging speeds are pretty rapid for the money though.
The Motorola Edge 70 Fusion is available to buy in the UK and Europe right now. The 5200mAh model with 8GB RAM and 512GB storage will set you back £370 in Sporting Green, Country Air or Orient Blue colours, while the 7000mAh version costs £379.
Motorola also debuted two new pairs of true wireless earbuds at this year’s Mobile World Congress. The Motorola Buds 2 and Buds 2 Plus are tuned by Bose and both have 11mm dynamic/balanced armature dual driver setups. They’ll each do high quality Bluetooth streaming via the LHDC codec and support spatial sound.
The Buds 2 Plus are the better equipped of the pair, promising dual connectivity, wear detection and a better good for nine hours of listening per charge – or up to 40 hours including a few trips to the flip-top charging case.
