MG’s new entry-level EV takes the MG4 in a fresh direction, writes James Stinson.
The MG4 has been one of the UK’s most successful electric cars of recent years, winning admirers for its value, style and driver appeal. Now MG is moving the game on again with the arrival of the all-new MG4 Urban – a car that deliberately breaks step with the rest of the MG4 line-up.
Where the familiar MG4 is becoming smarter, more sophisticated and more technology-rich for 2026, the new Urban model takes a more focused approach: maximum space, maximum affordability and maximum accessibility for families and first-time EV buyers.
A VERY DIFFERENT MG4
While the core MG4 range evolves into a more premium proposition with long-range batteries and uprated technology, the Urban is not simply a cheaper version.
MG has reworked the styling, interior packaging and cabin functionality to create a noticeably different car. Smoother surfacing, a cleaner nose design and Cyberster-inspired lighting elements give the Urban a softer, more approachable look than the sharper, sportier MG4 EV models.
Inside, MG adds a new three-spoke steering wheel, physical climate controls and an emphasis on practicality over performance – a contrast to the increasingly tech-focused and performance-oriented 2026 MG4 EV and the ferocious dual-motor XPOWER sitting at the top of the line-up.
DESIGNED FOR SPACE, COMFORT AND FAMILY LIFE
MG says the Urban is aimed at households wanting their first EV or those needing a practical second family car, and it certainly feels like it. Cabin space is exceptional for a compact electric hatchback: MG quotes 997mm of front headroom and 957mm in the rear, along with adult-friendly rear leg and knee room. A wide rear aisle and class-leading shoulder room help the Urban feel more like a car from the class above.
Luggage space is equally impressive, with 479 litres available to the roofline plus an extra 98-litre storage recess beneath the boot floor. Fold the rear seats and carrying capacity expands to 1,364 litres. There are also 30 separate cabin storage areas – far more than rivals typically offer.
TECH MADE SIMPLE
Despite being the entry point to MG4 ownership, the Urban offers a generous level of standard equipment. A 12.8-inch touchscreen joins a 7-inch driver display, with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto included on all versions. MG’s iSMART connectivity brings app-based features, while the Premium Long Range edition upgrades to wireless phone charging and online apps such as Spotify, Amazon Music and YouTube.
MG has also listened to customer feedback: physical buttons return for heating and audio controls, and the upgraded MG Pilot suite brings 17 driver-assistance systems. Premium models add a 360-degree parking camera.
DRIVING RANGE AND PERFORMANCE
All Urban models use MG’s new front-wheel-drive E3 platform and are available with two battery options. The Comfort Standard Range uses a 43kWh pack good for rapid 10–80% charging in 28 minutes. The Long Range 54kWh battery (Comfort and Premium) pushes the Urban’s maximum range to 258 miles (WLTP), with the same swift charging capability.
MG fits a heat pump as standard, helping preserve range in cold conditions. Five selectable drive modes – Snow, Eco, Standard, Sport and Custom – allow the driver to tailor throttle, steering and pedal response.
Ride quality leans towards comfort, with MG tuning the suspension and steering to suit everyday use rather than outright performance. With a tight 5.2-metre turning circle, the Urban also excels in town driving.
PRICES THAT PUSH EVS FURTHER INTO THE MAINSTREAM
Pricing is where the MG4 Urban makes its biggest statement. The entry-level Comfort Standard Range kicks off at £23,495, with the long-range version priced from £25,495. The Premium Long Range starts from £27,995. These figures comfortably undercut most mainstream electric hatchbacks and even challenge smaller city EVs.
VERDICT
For families or newcomers to electric motoring, this new MG4 Urban could be one of 2026’s most convincing entries in the EV market.
